Set in the middle of a dense forest in the hills, with spectacular views of the valley and greenery as far as the eye can see; Blue Planet Cafe is one of South Goa’s best-kept secrets.
A quaint, somewhat tilted building located right next to a yoga and wellness retreat, getting there is an adventure in itself. A narrow road in the woods leads you to this lovely cafe in Agonda – you have to pass a playful brook on your way. Needless to say, thanks to its obscure location and quirky character, Blue Planet is not exactly famous – we too, heard about it only through word of mouth. But the long, bumpy ride was definitely worth it, for what awaited us at its end was a beautiful, ‘ethical’ meal enjoyed in a tranquil ambience.
The menu is refreshingly creative and catering to vegetarian and vegan gourmands. We tried the Grilled Tofu Steak, which was a lovely assemblage of soft, golden fried tofu served with peanut sauce, organic boiled sweet potato, guacamole and gluten-free Millet bread. This scrumptious dish was washed down with a glass of creamy avocado dark chocolate shake – we could literally go back to this place only to drink another glass of that!
All the preparations at Blue Planet are a fusion of the East and the West cooked with as little oil as possible, raw ingredients and using organic (when available), local produce. Their spinach, mushroom and cheese fritters served with a tomato feta salad, mashed sweet potato, brown bread, cashew butter and vegan mayonnaise comes highly recommended. So does their spinach lasagna served with a mixed vegetable stir fry, organic green leaves, bean hummus, brown bread and vegan mayonnaise. Their steamed broccoli served with jungle coconut rice and avocado cream is a vegan specialty. In addition, they serve an array of salads, juices, smoothies, shakes and sides.
A notable feature of the food here, is the personal effort, love, and painstaking attention to detail put into every single dish. The flipside of this, of course, is that you have to wait for a long time for your order to reach your table, but it’s surely worth the wait. Also, despite being vegan dishes, everything we sampled was hearty and filling.
The simplistic decor comprises a bunch of wooden chairs and tables set in a balcony with a large window overlooking the valley. Owned by a sweet couple, Pravin and Urmila Desai, Blue Planet Cafe works on their mutually shared philosophy of dispelling all negative emotions by avoiding cruelty towards animals and promoting healthful dietary habits.
Next time you’re in Agonda, head here for some mouth-watering, cruelty-free yummies.
